Signs and tips to prevent type 2 diabetes

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – November is National Diabetes Month as the disease affects approximately 38 million Americans, including children.

Diabetes occurs when a person’s blood sugar or blood sugar levels are too high. The disease can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart. It is also linked to certain types of cancer.

People are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if they:

  • Overweight
  • 35 years or older
  • have a family history of diabetes
  • not physically active

UW Health experts say it’s important to remember the ABCs of diabetes, which can help prevent the disease.

  • A corresponds to the A1C test which measures average blood sugar. People with diabetes can use the device to track their blood sugar levels.
  • B is for blood pressure
  • It’s for cholesterol

A GLP-1 agonist can be injected into the body, which helps the body release insulin, slow digestion, reduce blood sugar spikes, and curb appetite.
