Here’s how to protect your home from natural gas leaks

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — From the moment a teenager was killed in southern Jordan house explosion caused by natural gas leakmany shared concerns about the safety of their own homes.

“When you consider, statistically, and I mean the statistics are so cold in a situation like this, statistically, your chances of this happening in your home are incredibly low,” the state fire marshal explained. Utah State, Ted Black.

Although residential explosions caused by leaks in the state are extremely rare, Black urges homeowners to take precautions when it comes to natural gas.

“We strongly recommend that you keep any storage space away from gas appliances, three feet from your furnace and water heater, as well as your fireplace if you have one,” he said.

Utahns should also make sure to properly maintain all household appliances.

Black said investigators are still working to determine the source of the natural gas leak in South Jordan, as well as its ignition source.

“We identify the problem, we can correct it and then make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said. “And that’s the goal here. We investigate fires to make people better off.”
