Delta Airlines sues CrowdStrike for $500 million in losses

Delta Airlines filed a lawsuit against CrowdStrike, accusing him of negligence and breach of contractwhich resulted in financial losses for airlines. What is now called a Black Swan event, a bug in a CrowdStrik update led to the crash of 8.5 million Microsoft devices worldwide.

Airlines have been one of the hardest hit sectors, resulting in thousands of flight cancellations. Delta Airlines was also caught in the whirlwind. He has now decided to sue CrowdStrike.

According to the company, its revenue was reduced by $380 million and it had to incur an additional cost of $170 million to recover from the system outages. More than 7,000 flights have been canceled, affecting 1.3 million passengers.

Delta accused CrowdStrike of taking shortcuts and ignore testing and certification processes for your own benefit. He said that if the company had rolled out the update to a single computer first, it would have known about the bug. This could have avoided the disaster that followed.

Another claim from Delta is that the CrowdStrike update was run on its system even though the company had automatic updates blocked. According to the airline, the software created and exploited an unauthorized door in Windows.

“The devastation that has been created deserves, in my opinion, to be fully compensated” – Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta

Crowd strike I apologized for the breakdown and assured that nothing like this would happen in the future. Microsoft also hosted a Security Summit September 10where he shared lessons learned from the incident and ways to strengthen system security.

Response from CrowdStrike

CrowdStrike harshly criticized Delta in its response. He described the trial as Delta’s desperate attempt to shift blame for his own faults. According to the IT company, Delta has failed to upgrade its IT infrastructurewhich he described as “antique”

Now, this statement has some substance.

Delta experienced an outage in August 2018, which resulted in more than 2,300 flight cancellations and losses of around $150 million – this had nothing to do with CrowdStrike, however.

This suggests that there could be technological issues within the company that need to be resolved for good. But since this incident, Delta has invested heavily in IT infrastructure and claims to have some of the best technology in the airline industry.

“As we sought to reach a business resolution that puts customers first, Delta chose a different path” – CrowdStrike

According to CrowdStrike’s claims, it contacted Delta for an amicable settlement after the incident. However, the airline received no response. CrowdStrike also said Delta doesn’t understand how the cybersecurity space works, which is why its lawsuit is riddled with misinformation.

It remains to be seen how this trial will unfold and whether the courts will hold the IT company responsible for the disaster.
