Amsterdam temporarily bans protests after anti-Semitic attack on Israeli soccer fans

The city of Amsterdam on Friday banned protests for three days, after dozens of Israeli football fans were injured in anti-Semitic acts. demonstrations Thursday, following a soccer match between Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel and Ajax of the Netherlands.

According to local police, around 20 to 30 Israeli soccer fans were lightly injured in the anti-Semitic attacks overnight, and five soccer fans were more seriously injured and released from hospital on Friday. A total of 63 protesters were arrested following these incidents and 10 remain in detention. by CNN.

Protesters waved Palestinian flags and shouted “Free Palestine.” according to at the Times of Israel. The Israeli Foreign Ministry urged Israeli citizens not to leave their hotels in Amsterdam on Thursday evening, and the Israeli National Security Council urged Israelis not to display Israeli or Jewish symbols.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said Friday that the attackers had driven around the city on scooters looking for Israeli supporters. She said a ban on protests would be in effect until Sunday and there would be an increased police presence.

“This is a terrible time for our city…I am truly ashamed of the behavior that was displayed last night,” the mayor said.

Halsema also banned “clothing covering the face” and “carrying objects” that could cause unrest.

Amsterdam police said the attacks took place on Thursday despite an increased police presence in the center of the city due to heightened tensions on Wednesday and ahead of Thursday’s match.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof denounced the unrest on Friday, calling it “horrible.”

“There are always problems around football matches, and football matches involving the Israeli team also receive special attention from the police, but the things that happened last night are just terrible, horrible,” Schoof told reporters. “This is completely unacceptable. I am in close contact with all parties involved and spoke by telephone with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu to emphasize that the perpetrators will be identified and prosecuted.”
