The rest, of course, is history. Downey Jr. brought some edginess to Tony Stark, which was precisely what Iron Man needed. He could handle Stark’s quick wit and complex flaws with an authenticity that made him the MCU’s unexpected hero. On set, Downey’s improvisational skills made some of Iron Man’s most unforgettable moments possible. The phrase “I am Iron Man”? Pure Downey. The entire script was notoriously loose, with the actors encouraged to improvise – and Downey Jr. excelled at this.

Cruise, despite being a master of action cinema himself, may have struggled with the improvised, realistic version of the character. Iron Man wasn’t polite, and that’s exactly what worked. Instead of playing it safe, Marvel let Downey Jr. bring his messy, unpredictable, and human qualities to Tony Stark. And it wasn’t just a movie. Downey Jr. would anchor the MCU, with his Tony Stark becoming the cornerstone of the franchise’s entire Infinity Saga. He had natural chemistry with the rest of the cast, particularly with Chris Evans’ Captain America, helping to shape the emotional center of the MCU.

Looking back, it’s hard to imagine anyone else in that red suit. The MCU without Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark would be an entirely different story, perhaps without the depth and charm that fans love. His take on the billionaire-turned-hero became so central to the MCU’s identity that even a Cruise appearance as a “variant” in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness never materialized. Maybe it’s for the best. Downey Jr.’s Stark is the only one fans need.

Sometimes budget constraints and casting risks are blessings in disguise. Cruise might have made a great Tony Stark, but Downey Jr. was Tony Stark. And as for Marvel? Not being able to afford Cruise may have been their best decision.
