Borderlands Movie Bombed at the Box Office, Why the Company’s CEO Still Says It ‘Didn’t Hurt’ the Franchise

After years of seemingly every movie based on a video game franchise being varying degrees terribleit seemed like we had entered some sort of golden age. Between films like box office winner The Super Mario Bros. movie. and the Sonic the Hedgehog from films, to television adaptations like The last of us And To fallit really seemed like Hollywood had found the secret sauce to making game adaptations that were at worst entertaining and at best really good. Then the Borderlands the movie has arrived.

Borderlands was destroyed by critics and is not adopted by the public. The film was a box office bomb and represented everything that was bad about video game adaptations. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Borderlands game developer Gearbox Software, recently admitted to IGN that the film was bad, but he says nothing was “hurt” by the film’s failure. In fact, the movie seems to have been a good thing overall. Strauss explained…

Obviously, this movie was disappointing. That said, he actually sold more catalog. So, I don’t think it hurt at all, but I think it may have helped a little. This highlights something I’ve talked about many times, which is the difficulty of transferring our intellectual property to another medium.
