$8 million to fight illegal Lake Mead roads

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The National Park Service received $8.66 million in grants to combat the increase in illegal roads and off-road vehicles.

The Conservation Initiative awarded the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act funds. Officials say they hope to resolve the issue through a five-year project plan.

Officials at Lake Mead National Recreation Area reported illegal routes doubled from the previously recorded 824 miles.

“This will be a very partnership-driven, community-driven project,” said park director Mike Gauthier. “We look forward to working closely with the public, tribes and conservation-focused partners to help protect cultural and natural resources in these key park locations.” Together, we will take the next steps for the future of the park, working to enhance the beauty and recreation that make Lake Mead special.

Officials hope the project will encourage community collaboration through education and awareness while addressing the current impacts of illegal roads on natural lands in Government Wash and Overton Arm.
