49 years later, Edmund Fitzgerald’s crew will be remembered in memorial ceremony

WHITEFISH POINT, Mich. (WLUC) – Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum Annual Tour Edmond Fitzgerald The memorial service will be offered as a live ceremony on Sunday evening.

The memorial service is closed to the public but will be available via a live stream link. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum buildings at Whitefish Point are not open to the public on Sundays.

The ceremony will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. ET on Facebook And YouTube. During the memorial, the Fitzgerald Bell will ring 29 times.

On November 10, 1975, the Fitzgerald and its entire crew of 29 men were lost on Lake Superior. It sank 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point. Whitefish Point is the site of the Whitefish Point Lighthouse and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.

The following year, Gordon Lightfoot released the hit song “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” documenting in its lyrics the events that unfolded that night.

The devastating shipwreck changed the way weather and conditions are reported on Lake Superior.
