Now that the 2024 presidential election election came and went, OpenAI revealed on Friday how many voters had consulted ChatGPT.

Before the elections, OpenAI has taken steps to stop the spread of false election information on the platform. It banned the use of ChatGPT to impersonate candidates or governments, distort how voting works, or discourage voting. It also has a digital watermark AI images created using SLAB to help identify images created using AI.

Additionally, the company has partnered with the National Association of Secretaries of State to provide accurate answers and direct users to CanIVote.orga nonpartisan voting information platform.

According to a blog post In the month leading up to the election, one million ChatGPT responses directed users to CanIVote.org and he rejected more than 250,000 infringement claims from the president-elect Donald TrumpVice President Kamala Harris, Vice President-elect JD Vance and Governor Tim Walz. On Election Day and the next day, two million ChatGPT responses encouraged users to turn to the Associated Press and Reuters for election results.

Despite OpenAI’s steps to stop the spread of election misinformation, the Bipartisan Policy Center still had concerns after asking ChatGPT various voting-related questions. The Bipartisan Policy Center warned that it is always “important to exercise discretion regarding its applications, particularly when they have significant implications for our democracy.”

“It’s easy to mislead users by relying solely on unconfirmed sources, such as ChatGPT and other chatbots, for answers,” the policy center report continues. “The bot has limitations on sending length and information training and often does not respond with complete or consistent information. We advise users to verify ChatGPT responses with reliable resources such as government websites or their local election commissions.”

This was the first presidential election where voters could turn to ChatGPT for election information and, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center, there is room for improvement before the midterms in 2026.
