Syracuse, New York — The Syracuse basketball The team takes on the Division II Clarion Golden Eagles in a preseason exhibition at 1 p.m. Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Pre-match

Update: Chance Westry will not play today, according to Mike Waters. He battled an illness during preseason workouts. He told us at media day that he would be good to go for the season and that his illness “wasn’t serious.”

Eddie Lampkin was pretty excited to be here today early and has a stated mission for the Orange this season.

Is it basketball season already?

In fact, it is. Well…sort of. It’s an exhibition game at the dome here today, but hey, if the Orange are dressed and want to play, they might as well check it out.

We’ll get our first look at seven new faces, four transfers and three freshmen, brought in to replace six departing 2023-24 Orange players, including former point guard Judah Mintz, who turned pro after his sophomore season, and forward /center Maliq Brown. , who is now at Duke.

Among the new faces is Eddie Lampkin, a 6-foot-11 transfer from Colorado, who is the presumed starter at center. He averaged 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds at Colorado last year.

Jaquan Carlos, a 6-foot senior from Hofstra, appears to be the likely starter at this point. He dished out 6.3 assists per game last season.

6-9 freshman Donnie Freeman, who made the 2024 McDonald’s All-America team; and Jyare Davis, a 6-7 senior transfer from Delaware. Davis is more physical and has more experience. Freeman is brimming with potential.

Other new players to watch: freshman guard Elijah Moore, an elite shooter; and 6-8 forward Petar Majstorovic and transfer Lucas Taylor (Georgia State).

Clarion is a Division II school located in Clarion, Pennsylvania. The Golden Eagles went 8-20 last season.
