SPD chief of staff suddenly resigns amid cheating allegations, fueling speculation

The chief of staff of the Seattle Police Department suddenly resigned this week, following allegations that she provided false information in an investigation and a disguised writing sample.

Jamie Tompkins quietly resigned on Wednesday without explanation, according to the SPD. The news was first reported by Publicola. Tompkins, a former television anchor, was a hand-picked recruit for now-former Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz.

Earlier this year, Diaz was demoted by Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell after allegations surfaced. several police officers alleging harassment and discrimination. The women have since sued the city.

Diaz later, in an interview, said he was gay. He has since filed a $10 million tort claim alleging he was discriminated against because of his sexual orientation.

Tompkins’ resignation adds more speculation about what’s happening internally at SPD at a time when the department is struggling to find new leaders.

The Office of the Inspector General wrote on October 24 that it had identified potential departmental violations by Tompkins, writing:

“It is alleged that during the course of the investigation, you provided untrue information, failed to fully cooperate with the investigation by providing a disguised writing sample, and inappropriately disclosed information about the investigation after a reprimand from OIG staff during your interview stating: “To maintain confidentiality. of this investigation, you are ordered by authority of the Chief of Police not to disclose information about this investigation except to your representative or attorney.

Diaz is also accused of lying during the same investigation.

He and Tompkins were placed on administrative leave shortly after the notice from current Seattle Police Chief Sue Rahr. Tompkins had already been demoted by Rahr to communications director.

It’s unclear why Tompkins chose to leave now. Her attorney declined to comment Friday, except to say she has not filed a tort claim. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, a police department spokesman, and Guild President Mike Solan declined to comment further on the matter.

The city is believed to be closing in on candidates to replace Rahr and is now offering $50,000 bonuses to police lateral transfers as it struggles to reach pre-pandemic levels.
