Chargers’ $19 million edge rusher expected to sign with NFC contender in 2025

THE Los Angeles Chargers envisioned great things when they traded for Khalil Mack ahead of the 2022 season. The idea of pairing him with Joey Bosa was exciting and many believed the team possessed the best passing combination in the NFL.

On paper, that may still be the case, but Bosa’s difficult injury history has made it difficult to make that happen. Mack is still a productive player for the defense, but he will be a free agent at the end of the season and could look for a better opportunity.

It was thought the Chargers might cut Mack before this season to save money against the salary cap, but the team opted not to do so. However, it would be slightly surprising to see him again next season, as the team has numerous players set to become unrestricted free agents, including Asante Samuel Jr., Elijah Molden, Morgan Fox, JK Dobbins, and Kristian Fulton, among others.

Mack has 4.5 sacks and a fumble recovery for the Chargers this season, but it remains to be seen whether or not he’s a part of the team’s future plans. Tuli Tuipolotu is a player the team can turn to and expand his role.

Bleacher Report’s scouting department has already begun preview of next year’s free agent market and Mack comes in at No. 21 on their Top 50 Free Agents list. The Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles are listed as potential suitors for the star passer.

Will Khalil Mack leave Chargers in free agency in 2025?

Mack will be 34 next season, so the Chargers could look to spend their money on a more youth movement. With Bosa also aging and dealing with several injuries, the round will likely be counted on Tuipolotu to play a larger role while also looking to the draft for another option.

Teams like the Eagles and Falcons are in the mix in a competitive NFC and could attract Mack with talk of a Super Bowl run. Mack, the No. 5 overall pick in 2014, has had great individual success during his career, but would likely like to be part of a team with a chance to win it all.

The Chargers could be in that conversation in 2025, but may not want to spend what it costs to keep Mack. A team like the Eagles or Falcons could wait with a lucrative one-year offer.
