Bella Bacon delivers for Brookline girls volleyball in Division 1 quarterfinal sweep at Barnstable

“It’s amazing,” Bacon said. “I couldn’t be more proud of my team, of my coaches. We really managed to pull ourselves together and with all our energy we were super excited.

Junior Emilie Ferdinand (10 kills), classmate Stasya Budnik (6 kills) and sophomore Molly Tipton (6 kills) were part of a balanced attack at the net, orchestrated by the setter of sophomore Nora Mullen (29 assists).

“Nora does a really good job spreading the offense, and we’ll get it from the back row or the front row,” Ferdinand said. “She does such a good job setting up the offense and it’s good for the team.” Keeps the other team on their toes.

The Warriors will next face No. 6 Acton-Boxborough in the Division 1 semifinals, with 15 straight wins including the only loss to top-seeded Newton North.

“They executed just about every aspect of volleyball exactly as it should, and they did it with style,” coach Caitlin Sobolewski said. “That belief is something that showed itself later in the season and now in the playoffs.

“So we’re hitting our stride at the right time.”

Needham 3, Winchester 1 — The two-set lead was cut to one, and Needham needed a point to prevent Winchester from forcing a fifth.

Alex Sykora picked his corner and got it.

The senior had eight kills, but none more important than the one that helped the No. 5 Rockets (17-5) finish the quarterfinals in four sets 25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 29- 27 against number 5. 13 Red and Black (20-3) at Needham High.

Needham’s triumph set up a Division 1 semifinal rematch with top-seeded Newton North.

“It’s a lot of pressure, but coach (Courtney Todesco) told us a lot of times that pressure is a privilege,” Sykora said. “We are so happy to be in this playoffs right now, not many teams make it this far. We used pressure to motivate ourselves.

Junior Sadie Stants had 10 kills and senior Lisa O’Leary added 8. Junior libero Lizzie Tam, who was the setter last year, was solid defensively. She added 2 kills and 4 aces, including a serve that helped Needham tiethen take the lead in the fourth.

“A lot of serving at this point is just trying to come in, but aggressively, so having that mindset has helped me help the team,” Tam said.

Although Tam’s sister Sam graduated after being named World Player of the Year last season, the Rockets saw several others step up to the net, and it produced a similar result to 2023.

“The key to our team this year is that we have been so well balanced,” Todesco said. “We were able to keep the ball moving, which was great.”
