Maria Carrillo and Piner teams win North Bay League cross country championships

Montgomery’s Hanne Thomsen, meanwhile, earned an individual victory in the women’s varsity race, the first of what could be three four-peat races over the coming weeks.

Hanne Thomsen of Montgomery earned an individual victory at the North Bay League cross country championships Saturday at Spring Lake in the first of what could be three four-peat runs over the coming weeks for the standout distance runner.

Many wondered if the Vikings senior would attempt to break Julia Stamps’ 1995 course record of 16 minutes, 15 seconds in her final high school race on the 2.97-mile course, and as she got off to a hot start , Thomsen realized halfway through the race that she had succeeded. I don’t have the energy to break it. Battling a cold, she finished in 16:55.76, well short of her personal best of 16:21, which is second all-time on the course, according to records compiled by redwoodempirerunning.com.

Yet she capped her NBL career with four consecutive individual titles, just the second girl to accomplish that feat since Santa Rosa’s Delaney White (2012-15), according to redwoodempirerunning.com.

“That was kind of my goal today; I just wanted to win and push hard in my last race here,” Thomsen said. “I knew I probably wasn’t going to be in contention for the record, but things like this happen.”

Thomsen will now be looking for his fourth straight North Coast Section Division 3 title in Hayward in a few weeks, then potentially his fourth straight CIF state title in Fresno at the end of the month. Only three girls in California history have won four consecutive CIF state titles in cross country.

“I feel like my training went really well; I feel stronger than ever before, but I think right now this disease is kind of an obstacle,” Thomsen said.

As has been the case in recent seasons, Thomsen led a trio of Vikings runners who finished 1-2-3, well ahead of the rest of the field. Amrie Lacefield (17:40.90) and Seelah Kittelstrom (18:11.27) rounded out the top three and Analy’s Sakina Woods (19:01.97) was the second-closest finisher in the girls’ race.

Maria Carrillo and Piner were the big winners in the team competitions. The Pumas captured the NBL-Oak, boys and girls pennants, while the Prospectors swept the NBL-Redwood pennants.

The Pumas had seven of the top 12 in the girls’ race, giving them 38 points to Montgomery’s 42. They were even more dominant in the boys’ race – winning with 34 points to Analy’s 61, with six runners finishing in the race. top 11. The Pumas boys have now won 18 of the last 21 NBL championship meets, while the girls have won 19 of the last 21, according to redwoodempirerunning.com.

Junior analyst Owen Dawson was the boys’ individual champion with a final time of 15:11.45. Not only is that a 28-second improvement over his personal best on the course, but it’s also the 12th fastest time ever run by a boy at Spring Lake, redwoodempirerunning.com shows.

“Everything worked out exactly how I thought it would,” Dawson said. “Maybe a little conservative on the first kilometer, the second kilometer was Cormac (Gaylord), Ome (Zuniga) and me just neck and neck, then on the last kilometer I had nothing left, but I knew that I had to get there in front – so I just did the whole last mile.

Windsor junior Xavier Surgeon finished second in 15:38.23, breaking Lucas Chung’s 2017 school record on the course by three seconds. Santa Rosa senior Ome Zuniga (15:45.99), Maria Carrillo junior Austin Petrik (15:49.23) and Analy senior Cormac Gaylord (15:51.81) round out the top five boys .

In the NBL-Redwood races, the Piner boys edged Healdsburg 38-40, while the Prospectors girls dominated with 31 points to 54 for runner-up Rancho Cotate. 58.95) placed third, with two of the six Prospectors runners placing in the top 15.

Cardinal Newman senior Gwen Brockett (19:16.41) ran individually and placed second overall. Ukiah freshman Allie Huff (20:37.21) placed fourth and Healdsburg freshman Madeleine Herzberg (20:38.7) placed fifth.

On the boys side, Piner had six of the top 11, led by junior Gaytan Esteban, who placed fourth overall in 16:57.78. Ukiah senior Oscar Ruiz was the individual champion in 16:30.98. Healdsburg junior Jake McWilliams (16:44.46) was second individually, Ukiah junior Gavin Falleri (16:47.46) took third and Healdsburg freshman Lucas Welty ( 17:01.84) placed fifth.

The teams will now have a few weeks off to rest and prepare for the NCS Championships on November 23 at Hayward High School.
