Wellington Phoenix captain Annalie Longo’s dog stops Women’s A-League clash against Canberra United

Canberra United overcame a canine invader to defeat Wellington Phoenix, with a Michelle Heyman goal securing their second successive A-League Women victory.

Heyman scored in the 11th minute for the 1-0 triumph before Phoenix captain Annalie Longo’s dog stole the show at Porirua Park to a stirring rendition of the Baha Men classic “Who Let the Dogs Out?”

Elsewhere in the ALW on Sunday, Adelaide United secured a 2-0 victory over Western Sydney.

Canberra are second in the table but their away win comes at a cost, with rookie Aideen Keane likely to remain on the sidelines.

The former Sydney FC midfielder left the match late in the first half in tears after suffering a suspected hamstring injury while attempting to shoot on goal.

Wellington (0-2) is also sweating on the fitness of goalkeeper Carolina Vilao after Keane’s knee hit her opponent’s upper thigh just before her hamstring injury.

Vilao played with visible discomfort before being replaced by Aimee Danieli for the second half.

Canberra easily opened up the hosts’ defense, with Maja Markovski providing an assist to set up Heyman’s 100th goal for United.

The Phoenix, anchored by Grace Jale and a brief canine cameo, fired after the main break to go 19 shots to eight, but couldn’t salvage a point.

At Wanderers Football Park, Emily Condon scored a brilliant corner to send the ball into the back of the net in added time before the main break.

The hosts argued that goalkeeper Sham Khamis was fouled, but Condon’s goal stood.

England import Fiona Worts made Wanderers suffer in the first minute of the second half after being launched from the center of the area.

A suspected wrist injury to Madison McComasky, suffered after the defender crashed to the ground following a collision with Erin Healy in the 31st minute, added to Western Sydney’s woes.
