School exhibition showcases activities of Hidankyo atomic bomb survivor group

Students organized an exhibition in Tokyo to showcase the activities of Nobel Peace Prize-winning atomic bomb survivor group Nihon Hidankyo.

The exhibition was part of a school festival held Saturday and Sunday at Showa Women’s University in the Setagaya district. It included about 50 items selected from documents related to Nihon Hidankyo.

Testimonies from family members of atomic bomb victims included detailed descriptions of how the survivors’ health changed after exposure. Family members also expressed hope that the government will compensate survivors, or hibakusha, and stressed that another nuclear war must be avoided.

Reports on the participation of survivors in international conferences and meetings with representatives from various countries were also presented. This included letters sent to leaders of the United States and other countries. The exhibits demonstrate the many years of effort Nihon Hidankyo has devoted to sending its message of nuclear abolition to the world.

The materials on display were provided by a group that aims to preserve the memory of hibakusha with a slogan “no more hibakusha.” Group member Kurihara Yoshie said the students carefully studied the materials and displayed them. She said their efforts helped publicize hibakusha activities that have not attracted much attention.

One of the students, Otsuka Miria, said she wanted people to know that they can pass on the history of the hibakusha through the materials, especially as it becomes increasingly difficult to hear directly the hibakusha.
