The Nursing and Midwifery Council had already suspended the nurse last year

A nurse caught drinking at work and offering alcoholic drinks to colleagues has been removed from the nursing register.

Jenny Steer was clinical manager at Country View Nursing Home in Kettering, Northamptonshire.

She drank alcohol during her shift and in the presence of colleagues between December 2019 and July 2020, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) heard.

Miss Steer did not attend the hearing, but apologized in a written submission at an earlier hearing.

She was initially suspended for one year by an NMC panel on November 22, 2023.

In its report, the committee concluded that “Miss Steer’s misconduct in ‘normalizing’ drinking on duty constituted a serious breach of… professional standards.”

Miss Steer told the panel in writing “that she made a mistake by drinking alcohol during her shift and offering alcoholic drinks to her colleagues”.

She also expressed remorse for her actions, the panel said.

A review of the suspension order by the NMC on November 4 found that she ceased practicing nursing in 2020.

He concluded she would be “likely to repeat” the same behavior if she returned to nursing.

The commission issued a delisting order, which will take effect on December 20, the date the original suspension was set to end.
