100 years ago, 1924: New discussions about the possible nomination of former Governor Sproul as United States Senator to succeed Senator George W. Pepper continue to be heard in Washington political circles. This was due, it was explained, to the resignation of Senator Pepper and his appointment to the Supreme Court to succeed a justice who was expected to retire. Governor Pinchot would then be asked to appoint Mr. Sproul to the Senate.

75 years ago, 1949: The last of the county’s three permanent federal housing projects, Overlook Heights in Woodlyn, is being auctioned off to the highest bidder. The government has already accepted bids for the other two projects, Crum Creek Manor (Garden City) for $1.1 million and Glendale Homes, Glenolden, for $975,000. The 250-unit Overlook Heights was also proposed just as the other two projects were becoming available to veterans or co-ops, but there was no interest in Overlook Heights.

50 years ago, 1974: Four hundred people attending Delaware County Community College’s grand opening Sunday heard the $19 million facility described as an index of the “Great American Dream.” Faculty delegate John J. Cronin said each country leaves “clues” for civilizations to judge through history. “Delaware County today made a statement on its priorities,” he said. “The building we are inaugurating today affirms that education is worth all our efforts. This shows that our culture can build more than just sports stadiums, office buildings, and highways.

25 years ago, 1999: With the recent death of its only dog in the K-9 unit, aptly named “Magnum,” the Upper Chichester Township Police Department would like $1,300 to purchase a new dog. At least some township commissioners aren’t so sure about the idea, but given some of the training costs that would accompany the purchase, the training and personnel cost estimate could total $20,000.

10 years ago, 2014: From Sound Off: This is for the person who buys all the pumpkin pies at Media Wawa. Hey, have you ever thought I might want pumpkin pie? Leave some for the rest of us. MEDIA’S KEVIN: To the buffoon in the gray truck who honked at the woman in front of him for over two minutes, shame on you. What gives you the right to bully someone like that? I hope karma honks at you one day.
