King Charles leads royal family in poignant Remembrance Sunday service | Royal | News

King Charles led the nation in observing a two-minute silence on Remembrance Sunday to commemorate those who died in the conflict on Sunday morning.

Dressed in his Royal Navy uniform as an admiral of the fleet with greatcoat, poppy and sword, the king was joined by members of the royal family, including his son. Prince Williamand his siblings, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, standing beside him at the Cenotaph.

Princess Kate stood on the Foreign Office balcony with Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, and watched 10,000 veterans take part in the Royal British Legion Veterans’ Parade.

The annual service is part of the royal calendar and takes place to mark the armistice of the First World War and all other conflicts involving British and Commonwealth forces.

The King laid the first wreath at the foot of the cenotaph, which features 41 open poppy petals made from bonded fabric. The magnificent crown closely resembles that produced for King George VI, Charles’ grandfather. It is mounted on an arrangement of black sheets 27 inches in diameter. The ribbon and bow represent the colors of the king’s racing silk: scarlet, purple and gold.

Major Ollie Plunket, the Queen’s equerry, laid a wreath on behalf of Her Majesty, as is tradition. Hers is slightly smaller, measuring 23 inches, and features 95 closed-style poppy petals.

Prince Williamwearing a Royal Air Force uniform at the rank of Wing Commander with a greatcoat, poppy and sword, was the next to lay down his crown.

Dressed in the uniform of the Royal Wessex Yeomanry, Prince Edward laid a wreath followed by Princess Anne, who wore the uniform of the Royal Navy at the rank of Admiral.

Senior political leaders then went to the cenotaph to lay wreaths.

Today marks Kate’s fifth public appearance of the year, as she took time off from royal duties after undergoing major abdominal surgery in January and being diagnosed with cancer.

In a video the princess posted in September, she revealed that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment and explained that she “can’t wait to return to work and undertake a few more public engagements in the coming months” .
