Several people arrested after taking part in pro-Palestinian demonstration in Amsterdam despite ban

Police arrested several people for taking part in a demonstration in central Amsterdam that was banned following violence targeting supporters of an Israeli football club, a local television channel reported.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema banned all protests this weekend following grim scenes of youths on scooters and on foot attacking Maccabi Tel Aviv fans on Thursday and Friday, which was widely condemned as a violent explosion of anti-Semitism in the Dutch capital.

Before the match against Ajax, Maccabi fans tore down a Palestinian flag from a building in Amsterdam and chanted anti-Arab slogans as they headed towards the stadium. There have also been reports of Maccabi fans starting fights.

A video broadcast on local TV channel AT5 on Sunday showed police arresting a man who was taking part in a small demonstration in Dam Square. Protesters chanted slogans such as “free and free Palestine.” AT5 reported that around 20 people were arrested.

Protest organizers went to court Sunday morning seeking an injunction allowing the protest, but a judge upheld the city’s ban.

At the hearing, Olivier Dutilh, a senior Amsterdam police officer, said there had been renewed incidents overnight targeting people suspected of being Jewish, with some ordered to get out of taxis. and others invited to present their passports to confirm their nationality.

Police launched a large-scale investigation Friday after youth gangs carried out what Amsterdam’s mayor called “hit-and-run” attacks on fans, apparently inspired by calls on social media targeting to target Jews. Five people were hospitalized and more than 60 suspects were arrested.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar visited the Netherlands on Friday and offered Israel’s help in the police investigation. He met Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof on Saturday and said in a statement that the attacks and demands for passports were “recalling dark periods in history.”
