Defense dismantled the Cowboys without Dak Prescott

ARLINGTON, Texas — Snapshot notes on the Eagles’ performance in a 34-6 win over the Cowboys:

Quarterback: B-

Jalen hurts struggled for much of the first half. He had two turnovers and took several sacks in part because he held the ball too long. But the quarterback bounced back and made some key throws and runs as the Eagles blew out the Cowboys. In total, Hurts completed 14 of 20 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown. He rushed seven times for 56 yards and two scores.

But after four games without a turnover, Hurts gave the ball away twice before the break. The first was a red zone interception against Trevon Diggs in the second quarter. The Cowboys cornerback made a good play with the ball, but it looked like Hurts’ pass was just behind his target. A few drives later, Hurts was sacked. In total, Hurts was sacked five times for a total of 26 during the season. This is at the highest pace of his career.

Hurts bounced back, however, leading the Eagles 84 yards in seven plays for a touchdown before the break. He capped the series with an impressive play – shaking off an unblocked DeMarvion Overshown and launching a 14-yard dime to Dallas Goedert for the score. Hurts scored his ninth rushing touchdown – and the 50th of his career – on a tush push in the first quarter. After failing to convert the sneak play twice last week, the Eagles returned to their short yardage game. Hurts added another on the ground on a zone keeper in the third quarter.

Hurts was given an off night early in the fourth quarter and was replaced Kenny Pickett took over.

Revenant: B

Saquon Barkley » sounded his left arm while making a tackle on Hurts’ fumble. He did not play the rest of the first half, but returned after the break with a bandaged forearm. He helped the Eagles ice the game with tough runs, and in total he rushed 14 times for 66 yards. He also caught a pass for an early conversion on third down in which Cowboys linebacker Eric Kendricks appeared unwilling to confront Barkley down the field.

Kenneth Gainwell spelled Barkley on occasion and finished with seven carries for 30 yards. He had a nice 13-yard run on an out-of-zone run in the third quarter. On the Eagles’ first drive, Gainwell missed a blitz and Hurts was sacked. Linebacker Ben Van Sumeren played some fullback and had a few head blocks for Barkley in the second half.

Receiver/tight end: B+

AJ Brown led the Eagles with five catches on seven targets for 109 yards. The receiver reached the century mark for the third time this season. He did well to find space on his 30-yard catch and run in the first quarter. His 44-yard over-the-shoulder grab expanded the Eagles’ league-leading number of plays of 40-plus yards. DeVonta Smith was once again underutilized. He caught 2 of 3 targets for 14 yards, although he did draw a holding penalty on a downfield route in the second quarter. Smith also got behind Dallas cornerback Caelen Carson on a deep sideline route before halftime, but Hurts overthrew him.

Goedert returned from a three-game absence and caught two passes for 25 yards and a touchdown. He also had some key blocks in the running game. Beginner Receiver Johnny Wilson scored the first touchdown of his career by catching a 5-yard pass in the end zone in the third quarter. Jahan Dotson made a 27-yard catch in the second quarter. Dotson did well to come back on Hurts’ back pass. With the return of Goedert, Grant Calcaterra moved back to second at tight end. He only saw one pass coming, but he also factored in the running game as a blocker.

Beginner Receiver Aïnias Smith I had a few touches for little distance.

Offensive line: B

Hurts faced a lot of pressure, but it wasn’t entirely because of the Eagles’ O-line. He held the ball too long, especially in the first half. Fred Johnson started at left tackle in place of the injured Jordan Mailata for a fourth consecutive match. He had his ups and downs – much like the previous three games – but he ultimately held his own. He saw Micah Parsons on occasion, but the Cowboys edge rusher lined up at right tackle. Lane Johnson a bunch.

Lane Johnson did an impressive job — as did the entire O-line — when he blocked Parsons on Wilson’s touchdown run in the third quarter. The injured have had all kinds of weather. Guards Landon Dickerson And Mekhi Becton had some strong combo blocks with the center Cam Jurgens who opened holes in the ground. Becton was beaten by Cowboys linebacker Overshown and Barkley was left at the line for no gain.

The O-line, as a group, had a few false starts in the first half. The film will tell the full story of his performance, but it’s hard to quibble with the end result.

Defensive line: B+

Even though Cooper Rush played in place of the injured Dak Prescott, the Eagles pass rush struggled to reach the Cowboys quarterback. This was largely due to Rush getting the ball out quickly on one-read passing plays. The Eagles recorded three sacks in the fourth quarter.

The defensive front was pretty solid against the run, though. They held Dallas running backs to 75 yards on 18 carries. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter was a beast the entire game. He made a huge third-down tackle for loss on Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle near the goal line before halftime. Jordan Davis continued to play mostly in rundown periods. He didn’t put up any numbers, but he blocked the middle.

Milton Williams had a sack and recovered a fumble quickly when Rush mishandled the snap. Josh is sweating didn’t get to the quarterback, but he did an impressive job tackling Trey Lance on a zone read when the backup took a few snaps in the third quarter.

Bryce Huffwho played only six snaps last week because, according to the team, he injured his wrist during warmups, entered the game in good health. However, he appeared to have an extra bandage on his left hand. Huff played fewer snaps than other Eagles rushers, including rookie Jalyx Hunt. But he sacked Rush late in the third quarter when he slapped Cowboys right tackle Terence Steele. Outside linebacker Nolan Smith did well to take the advantage against the race. Defensive end Brandon Graham share a bag with Carter.

Defensive tackle Moro Ojomo received a holding penalty in the third quarter.

Linebacker: A

Zack Baun may have been the Eagles defensive player of the game. He forced two fumbles and led the defense with eight tackles. Baun’s turnover in the fourth quarter helped seal the outcome, but there was no more important play than when he knocked the ball out of Ezekiel Elliott’s hands just short of the goal line in the second quarter . Earlier in the same drive, Baun tackled Elliott in the backfield for a loss and stopped Dowdle for no gain.

Dean Nakobe I had a good outing. And was right behind Baun in tackles. He made a nice open field tackle on a short throw from Rush in the third quarter. But he missed a near-interception in the second quarter, and later on the same drive he missed a few potential tackles against the run.

Cornerback: A

Rush was brutally bad, but the Eagles secondary deserved credit for limiting his success on the field. Kill Darius was in and out after suffering an ankle injury on the Cowboys’ first possession. He had a pass breakup on third down, but rolled his ankle during the play. He returned midway through the second quarter, but was flagged shortly after for third-down pass interference . He was intermittent in the second half and shared his time with his replacement, Isaiah Rodgers.

Rodgers held up very well. Beginner Quinyon Mitchell locked down his side of the field and had a few pass breakups. One of them came on a third down in the first quarter. Mitchell received a penalty for illegal use of hands in the second quarter.

Cooper De Jean I saw a fair amount of Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb in the slot. It helped keep him to just 21 yards on six catches. DeJean also recovered Baun’s forced fumble just before he ran out of the back of the end zone for a touchback.

Safety: A-

CJ Gardner-Johnson made his presence felt on the Cowboys’ first play from scrimmage when he took a hit to receiver Jalen Tolbert after a swing pass. The safety was also on Dowdle’s fumble, although Baun was credited for the turnover. Gardner-Johnson had a close pick on a Rush overthrow, but later rebounded for his second interception of the season. He took a strange route on Dowdle’s longest run of the game.

Reed Blankenship made four tackles and recovered Baun’s second forced fumble.

Special teams: B

DeJean had a 31-yard punt return in the third quarter. Kicker Jake Elliott made all his attempts. Braden Mann averaged 42 net yards on his punts.

The Eagles’ kick coverage unit allowed a 47-yard return by KaVontae Turpin in the first quarter. Beginner Jeremiah Trotter Jr. had an illegal block in the back that brought home Gainwell’s 26-yard kick return in the second quarter. Beginner Will Shipley had a strong 32-yard return to open the second half.

Training: A

Nick Sirianni has the Eagles 7-2 and in first place in the NFC East heading into Thursday’s 7-3 showdown with the Commanders. The win over the Cowboys was the team’s first at AT&T Stadium since 2017. Offensive coordinator Kelly Moore did well to mix up his calls and helped Hurts calm down after a slow start.

Vic Fangio‘s defense has been outstanding since the bye and hasn’t allowed the Cowboys into the end zone while forcing five turnovers. Rush was terrible, but the defensive coordinator’s unit played a big role in limiting Dallas to just 146 total yards.
