Harris and Trump won states without voter ID laws

(NewsNation) — Certain media and fact-checking sites discredited a lie that spread on social media after the election that Vice President Kamala Harris only won states that did not require voters to show ID at the polls.

“She didn’t actually win every state where a photo ID isn’t required,” said Lisa Bryant, chair of the political science department at California State University, Fresno. French press agency AFP.

“Thirty-six states have laws requiring or requiring voters to present some form of identification in elections,” according to the National Conference of State Legislatures website. “The remaining 14 states and Washington, DC, use other methods to verify voter identity,” he adds.

Fourteen states do not require ID when people vote in person, and Harris won 12. President-elect Donald Trump won the other two, Pennsylvania and Nevada. Harris also won seven states that require photo or non-photo ID to vote in person.

Some social media posts suggest that people ineligible to vote took advantage of states that don’t require ID and voted for Harris. Some of these posts have been viewed several million times.
