Michigan begins its first losing streak since 2020 after struggling offensively in heavy road losses to Washington and Illinois. The Wolverines have a lingering question to quarterback and didn’t name a starter for the MSU game, while the Spartans found something that worked on offense against Iowa. Aidan Chiles’ effective performance under center led to 32 points with just one turnover.

The winner of the game will move one win away from bowl eligibility while the loser will fall to .500 and need two wins in the final month to reach the playoffs.

The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network or Fubo (free trial). Michigan is a 4½-point favorite, according to BetMGM.

Michigan vs. Michigan State Pregame Notes

The Wolverines and Spartans meet for the 117th match of the battle for Paul Bunyanwith Michigan holding a sizable lead in the all-time series as well as an active two-game winning streak. MSU last won the rivalry in 2021 and is looking for its first win at Michigan Stadium since 2020.

Michigan has struggled to put together an offense this year thanks to the lack of passing resulting from the quarterback problem and one of the worst turnover problems in the country. Michigan still found success at times with a run-heavy approach, with the Wolverines ranking in the bottom third of the country in scoring, passing yards and giveaways. Michigan could be without cornerback Will Johnsonwho left the last game early due to a foot injury.

MSU has significantly improved its defense starting in 2023, limiting teams to 20.86 points per game, and held Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson, the nation’s second-leading rusher, in check until a late burst into the end zone after the rules of the match.

On the other hand, Michigan State’s offense had some issues, particularly with turnovers, but showed the ability to boom or bust. with the Chilis softening last week. The Spartans put together a complete performance last week against Iowa with over 200 yards rushing and passingbut now I have a test against Michigan’s decorated defense and defensive line.

Michigan vs. Michigan State prediction, picks

Chris Solari, Detroit Free Press: A buried primetime showdown on the Big Ten Network will prove TV executives made the wrong decision, as the Spartans and Wolverines live up to their historically heated and intense rivalry with a Big Ten brawl of the highest magnitude. Chiles continues to get pressure and UM comes home enough to disrupt the rhythm early on. But MSU’s vastly improved defense shut down Mullings and the Wolverines’ running game in a low-scoring affair, with Chiles guiding the Spartans into field goal range for enough Jonathan Kim kicks to start a two-game losing streak consecutive against UM. The choice: MSU 20, UM 13.

Tony Garcia, Detroit Free Press: The fact that this game wasn’t a complete runaway for Michigan shows both how far UM has fallen and the step MSU has taken. UM needs to win the turnover and time of possession battle and get the running game to carry it against a strong MSU front. MSU, however, feels like it can win even with a turnover or problem in the running game, with an advantage on special teams and in drive. The choice: MSU 22, UM 19.
