Everything is a bit pessimistic at West Ham.

Pressure is mounting on Julen Lopetegui, David Moyes’ replacement, who has so far delivered neither the style Hammers fans craved nor the results achieved by his predecessor.

Lopetegui is apparently in no immediate danger of being sacked, but it is clear that results need to improve. There is, however, a tiny glimmer of hope among those who seem hopeless.

Over the last four games, which again included crushing defeats to Chelsea and Tottenham, their underlying numbers have improved significantly, not only from their debut under Lopetegui, but also surpassing Moyes’ final season in terms of assists, shots and chances they concede.

Results need to improve – and quickly – but this shows that, perhaps, over time they could.

THE SHARPE END: Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham showing signs of improvement – even if results haven’t shown it yet – and why Rasmus Hojlund can save the day for Erik ten Hag’s Man United

Julen Lopetegui won three of his first 10 games as West Ham manager in all competitions

The return of Rasmus, a big boost for Ten Hag

Rasmus Hojlund’s return from injury is a huge boost for another under-pressure manager, Erik ten Hag.

United win more games when Hojlund starts, lose a lot less and score more goals.

Despite missing 12 Premier League matches since his arrival and only starting 27, he remains United’s top scorer.

He only needed 40 shots to score his 11 goals.

No other player under 25 with six goals in that span can boast a better shots-to-goals ratio.
