76ers rookie sees star performance in overtime win

In just a few games, the Philadelphia 76ers have struggled to get off the pad.

They’re off to a 1-7 start and have yet to find synergy among their three stars, with former MVP Joel Embiid still yet to play a game due to injury and suspension.

The team’s newest recruit, Jared McCain, has been a beacon of hope, however.

On Sunday night, the No. 16 pick put together the magnum opus of his basketball career in an overtime victory against the Charlotte Hornets.

McCain was the 76ers’ leading scorer that night, scoring 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting, adding three rebounds and two assists. He finished shooting 3 of 8 from beyond the arc, adding four free throws in as many tries.

And even on an offensive night that earned him the respect of everyone on the court, McCain also played stingy defense, something rarely seen among rookies.

That performance came just days after an 18-point game against the Lakers, and he has now scored in double figures in four of his nine tries.

Over those nine games, McCain now ranks fourth among all rookies with 10.2 points per game. Better yet, he’s shooting 46 percent from the floor, which is well above most other top-scoring rookies except for Memphis center Zach Edey.

The Sixers next face the similarly struggling New York Knicks on Tuesday, November 12, in hopes of righting the ship.
