Amazon makes smart glasses for delivery workers: report

  • Amazon is reportedly developing smart glasses that its delivery people could use.
  • The glasses could enable navigation and take photos of packages being delivered, Reuters reported.
  • Amazon would face challenges such as battery life and location data when creating the glasses.

AmazonThe next attempt to speed up package delivery could involve smart glasses.

The online retailer is developing glasses for its delivery workers that could show them exactly where to go in a building, such as which direction to turn to find a delivery location, and take photos of packages once delivered, Reuters reported Monday, citing anonymous sources with knowledge of the project.

Having this information on a small screen built into the glasses instead of a smartphone or other hand-held device would allow workers to carry more packages and save time on deliveries, Reuters reported.

The launch of the project, known within Amazon under the code name “Amelia,” is far from certain, according to the report. Some challenges Amazon reportedly faced include creating a battery with enough capacity for a multi-hour delivery shift and collecting enough location data for the glasses to guide workers.

“We’re continually innovating to create an even safer and better delivery experience for drivers,” an Amazon spokesperson told Business Insider. “In addition, we do not comment on our product roadmap.”

Amazon, like Meta and Snap, has already developed consumer-facing smart glasses.

Amazon proposed Echo framesits consumer smart glasses with built-in Alexa voice assistant, since 2019. Echo Frames do not include cameras or a built-in display but feature built-in microphones and speakers. Amazon is using Echo Frames as the basis for its delivery-focused version, according to Reuters. Sales of Echo Frames’ latest release totaled less than 10,000 units over the past year, according to the report.

Glasses for delivery drivers would be another way Amazon is using technology to try to make its delivery operations more efficient, particularly during the final stretch, or “last mile,” of delivery.

Amazon is already planning to add AI technology which will tell its delivery drivers which packages to deliver to the back of delivery vans at specific stops from early 2025.

The company announced in July that it had delivered 5 billion items to Prime members globally the same or next day so far this year, an increase of 30% over one year. Over the years, a few Amazon delivery people said Amazon has very ambitious delivery goals and expects them to deliver more packages than they can during their shifts.

In October, Amazon Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said the company’s fast delivery times made ordering more attractive to customers. inexpensive everyday itemssuch as beauty products and shelf-stable groceries, from the retailer.

Amazon is also opening more facilities designed to deliver customer orders, including those placed through Amazon Prime – the same day of their placement.
