Clark reveals why she was ‘so upset’ after historic No. 1 choice moment

Caitlin Clark reflected on a surprisingly emotional moment following her selection as the top pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, admitting she was “so upset” right after hearing the news.

During a November 5 appearance on the “Fresh tawk” Podcast — a special reunion with former Iowa Hawkeyes teammates Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall — Clark, now with the Indiana Fever, explained how enthusiasm for the draft quickly gave way to frustration. Despite the monumental feat to be drafted first, Clark found herself immediately withdrawing from the scene and walking away from the event, which left her feeling disconnected.

“I just took my medicine right away and didn’t get a chance to see the draft,” Clark said. She added that even though she had her phone with her, she couldn’t fully enjoy the moment. “It upset me so much. I didn’t even see Kate get drafted.”

This moment was meant to be a celebration, not only of her career milestone, but also of the accomplishments of her teammates. Instead, Clark felt disappointed that she wouldn’t be able to experience all the excitement of the night.

Now in her first offseason after an outstanding rookie season, Clark’s first year in the WNBA has been nothing short of remarkable. She was named the 2024 Rookie of the Year by the league and the Associated Press, averaging 19.2 points, 8.4 assists (highest in the league), 5.7 rebounds and 1, 3 interceptions per game. Her impact on the court was immediate, making her one of the most exciting players to watch in the league.
