An NFL coach remains skeptical that Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will be able to maintain his current rushing load long term.

“We will see if this is sustainable over several years,” the coach told The Athletic newspaper. Mike Sando.

Commanders have already reduced Daniels’ touches. In their first five games, he had 57 carries for 300 yards and four touchdowns, compared to 164 yards on 28 carries in their last five games.

Opposing teams also appear to be adjusting to the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner. He had just five rushing yards in Sunday’s 28-27 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Daniels’ health was in the spotlight ahead of Washington’s Week 8 game against the Chicago Bears, given that he left the Week 7 win over the Carolina Panthers when he suffered a rib injury.

Although he missed several practices before the game against Chicago, ESPN Adam Schefter reported that “all signs point” to him playing. Schefter also reported that the plan was to allow the LSU product to go through pregame warmups to see how he felt and cited a team official who said the quarterback was “a dude badass.”

Daniels not only played in the game, he ended up completing a Hail Mary on the final play to clinch a dramatic victory.

It was one of the early highlights of a stellar rookie season for the signal-caller, who completed 68.7 percent of his passes for 2,147 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions.

Commanders fans know better than anyone the added injury risk that dual-threat quarterbacks face in the NFL. They still remember Robert Griffin III’s torn LCL and LCL during the 2012 season, which derailed his career.

Now and moving forward, managing Daniels’ workload is imperative for Washington.
