Mike Norvell makes most Florida State employees scapegoats for Seminoles disaster

Mike Norvell has purged his coaching staff, but that won’t erase the damage already done this season. Nothing can take away the disappointment that is Florida State Seminoles right away.

Of course, the offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and wide receivers coach probably needed to be fired. But anyone who believes they are the real problem is wrong. There is a bigger problem, and no coordinator is responsible for it.

Norvell has reached rock bottom, and firing the coordinators won’t improve anything. In fact, Norvell knows his job is secure (for now) thanks to his lucrative buyoutso I guess making these gestures just means he’s finally admitting that things aren’t going well.

But Norvell is the real problem, and until he figures out how to keep this team from repeating the same fate, the failures of the 2024 season next year, making scapegoats of his colleagues will not solve anything.

The problem Norvell will have to deal with next season is that when he has to replace his coordinators, the job at hand is not attractive. The Seminoles entered 2024 as a preseason top 10 team.

They finished last season begging to be included in the College Football Playoffs. They finish the 2024 season as college football’s biggest disappointment. I’m not sure where they go from here.

When they faced Notre Dame this weekend, a win was by no means expected. But three points? And 52 against. Florida State finds itself in an impossible situation.

Something had to be done to start the rebuild in Tallahassee. I guess laying off staff members who probably wouldn’t come back next year is a start. But there is much more to fix than new coordinators. The task before Norvell to truly turn this program around will likely be more difficult than when he first took the job. Their situation may be worse now than it was when he took over before the 2020 season.

But I guess that’s why he got a massive buyout and a significant extension. Because it’s his job. He just needs to know where to start.
