Family mourns 16-year-old killed in ATV crash south of Columbus

A family mourns the loss of a 16-year-old who died following ATV accident in south Columbus.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, November 5. The ATV, with Felix Estrada as a passenger, was riding illegally on a city street when it crashed into a car at an intersection around 2:30 p.m. Estrada and the driver were ejected from the 4-wheeler and taken to Grant Hospital, where Estrada later died.

“My chest felt heavy, my heart hurt,” said Makeya Wylie, Estrada’s older sister. “I just got on my knees and prayed and prayed and prayed.”

Wylie recalled his brother’s cheerful nature, saying, “He was just an all-around great person. There was never a time when I didn’t remember Felix not smiling or not being happy , and it really took a toll on many of us, family members, friends.

Estrada had recently started high school.

“He just went to prom, his first ever homecoming,” Wylie said. “He was just a great kid, not only because he was part of my family, but he was just an all-around great person.”

Family and friends plan to honor Estrada and raise funds for his funeral Monday at 4 p.m. at Colton’s Place in Hilltop.

Wylie vowed to keep his brother’s memory alive, saying: “Felix will live forever through me and my children, my grandchildren. I will never forget his smile. I will never forget his laugh. I will I will never forget his voice.”

It is illegal to operate ATVs and dirt bikes on the streets of Columbus City. Columbus police have repeatedly targeted those who break the law and drive recklessly as part of “Operation Wheels Down.”

This is a targeted crackdown where illegal drivers can be fined, arrested and their ATVs and bicycles can be confiscated.
