Political tensions flare as Center County nears solar power vote

In Center County, a long-awaited vote could soon take place on a regional solar power purchasing agreement, but political wrangling is also intensifying, with some involved already saying they don’t support the project.

The project has been in the works for years, with nearly ten organizations and municipal entities, including Center County government and the State College Borough, working on an agreement to purchase solar power.

Officials say the idea is the deal will help lower electricity bills.

But there are now disagreements over the project’s legal costs, as well as other issues.

One of those speaking out is State College Borough Council member Josh Portney, who says despite repeated requests, he can’t even get a copy of the borough’s current electric bill to compare it to the electricity prices provided for in the agreement.

“I haven’t received anything and it’s infuriating. And it’s not just me, it’s council member Heradon. These are simple things. Just send me a copy. I don’t even need to see everything. I don’t need to see the card information. I just need to see the bill.

Portney says that for simply asking questions and criticizing the solar power deal process, he is facing unfair criticism and attempting to withdraw from regional government committees.
