Calgary Swifties head to Toronto and Vancouver for Taylor Swift tour

It’s the show of the year, if not the decade, for Taylor Swift fans, better known as Swifties.

The music icon is bringing his Eras World Tour to Canada’s largest city this week, and while tickets are nearly impossible to get at the moment, some lucky Calgarians are making the trip from Calgary to Toronto.

“It’s starting to feel real, for sure,” said Ella Buchanan, 16, who is traveling with her twin sister and parents to see Swift in concert Friday, one of six sold-out shows in the largest city in Canada.

“It still feels like a dream,” Macey Buchanan, 16, said.

The Buchanans purchased their tickets more than a year ago and have since set up a calendar to countdown each day.

They personalized each outfit right down to the details of their shoes.

Everyone will be dazzled or in an outfit inspired by Swift or her music, except their dad, who will be wearing a Travis Kelce jersey.

“The whole (family) was consumed by Taylor’s preparation,” Tyneal Buchanan said.

“It’s been pretty special for all of us. We’ve always been pretty tight, but we’ll remember it forever.”

They’ve also created over 200 friendship bracelets to share with other fans.

It’s a trend that was sparked by the lyrics of one of Swift’s songs.

“Taylor Swift is truly unique in her ability to motivate and excite a fan base,” said Dawn Johnston, a professor of communications, media and film at the University of Calgary.

“A lot of musicians and artists have dedicated, enthusiastic followings, but I think the fact that Taylor Swift has grown up in the public eye and she’s grown as an adult, as a feminist, in the eyes of the public audience is one of the most interesting things about her.”

The Eras tour will travel to Toronto for six shows between November 14 and 23 before heading to Vancouver in December, the final stop of just two in Canada.

Heather Roy and her daughter Harper recently won a pair of tickets to a show in Vancouver after entering a contest at a Calgary dentist.

“It’s like winning the lottery,” Roy said.

“It’s like the Beatles for our parents’ generation.”

But for the duo, the show is much more than just a concert.

They will pay tribute to their daughter and sister who died of cancer, who was a huge Swiftie and played song 22 during her battle with the disease.

For Heather Roy and her daughter Harper, Taylor Swift’s Vancouver show is more than just a concert.

“I think this concert will be really special. It will just be a moment where we have him with us,” Roy said.

“Many special memories in difficult times are due to this music.”
