Superman and Lois finally introduced Jimmy Olsen, but I’m even more shaken by the game-changing decision Clark Kent just made

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS for the Superman and Lois the episode “A Regular Guy” is early!

When Doomsday killed Superman and dumped his body downtown Smalltown In Superman and Loishe didn’t just take away the world’s greatest superhero. It also paved the way for various people in Kansas City to begin to suspect that Clark Kent was Superman, given Lois, Jonathan, and Jordan’s reaction to the horrible sight. Now that Clark is back among the livinghe and the entire Kent family have had to deal with various neighbors and fellow citizens who suggest, or even outright assert, that they know this secret.

This brings us to the events of “A Regular Guy,” which just finished its run on TV schedule 2024 and ended with Clark making a game-changing decision that left me shaken and will have major ramifications for Superman and Lois‘latest episodes. But before we get into that, let’s talk about how the DC TV show ultimately presented its version of Jimmy Olsen, played by Douglas Smith.

Clark Kent’s past with Jimmy Olsen revealed

“A Regular Day” was peppered with flashbacks to Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s Daily Planet days, when they worked alongside Jimmy and his sister Janet. At this point in his life, Clark had told Lois that he was Superman, but he was doing his best to make sure no one else found out. So when Jimmy invited him to join the Daily Planet softball team, he initially refused because he didn’t want to draw attention to himself. However, following Lois’ insistence and realizing that he could be the “bunt guy”, Clark changed his mind, and it seemed that this would be the start of him and Jimmy becoming friends outside of work.

However, due to various emergencies around the world that required Superman’s attention, Clark was ultimately unable to attend any further softball games. Jimmy didn’t accept Clark’s apology and initially thought it was his way of demonstrating that he didn’t want to hang out with him. But Smith’s Jimmy Olsen is a smart cookie, as are most versions of the character, and he figured out that every time Clark missed a game, Superman was somewhere else in the world saving people. So one night he confronted Clark and asked him if he was Superman. Clark denied this, and in order to sell his story, the next time there was a Daily Planet softball game, he simply didn’t show up, even though Superman wasn’t needed elsewhere.

So now we know why Jimmy Olsen hasn’t been seen on Superman and Lois until now, when Clark went out of his way to make it seem like he wasn’t interested in being friends with him in order to protect his secret. This stands in stark contrast to the traditional “buddies” dynamic they have, although it was obvious that Clark was disappointed at having to make this decision. Luckily, these two met again at the end of “A Regular Guy” on friendly terms, but I’ll get to that later.

The world knows Clark Kent is Superman

Cut to Superman and Lois‘Today’s story, Clark Kent was going around town trying to convince people who indicated they knew he was Superman that they were seriously mistaken. Pretty easy, right? Not really. Clark was more or less successful in achieving his goal, and there was a particularly uncomfortable scene where he, Jonathan and Jordan were turning on Timmy Ryan, one of the the boys‘classmates, in front of his mother. Jonathan and Jordan were also frustrated with all the lies they had to tell to protect a spreading secret.

Then entered Emmitt Pergande, the abusive father of Jonathan’s girlfriend Candice, whom Clark ran out of town last season for threatening his family and his criminal activities. Having been informed that Clark is Superman, he showed up at Victoria May’s with a gun to show everyone the truth while Clark and Lois were having dinner with Kyle Cushing and Chrissy Beppo. Emmitt fired one shot and left with no other choice. The Man of Steel let the bullet deflect off his chest and allowed everyone in the restaurant to see him in his Superman costume. In other words, it wasn’t possible to put the proverbial genie back in the bottle with the people of Smallville, but then Clark decided to take a giant step.

After getting his family’s blessing, Clark gave a television interview to Janet Olsen to reveal his secret to the world. There’s no turning back, and by extension, that means the world also knows Jonathan and Jordan have powers. “A Regular Guy” ended on a high note, as Clark met Jimmy Olsen for the first time in years, and his former colleague completely understood why he didn’t tell him the truth at the time. Looks like these two are finally going to become friends!

I admit I was surprised that a revolutionary decision like this had come before Superman and Lois‘ series finale, this is how Supergirl manipulated Kara Zor-El revealing her secret identity to everyone. So it will be interesting to see how this factors into the final three episodes, for better or worse. Speaking of worse, we also learned that Emmitt Pergande didn’t learn that Clark Kent was Superman from Candice, but rather Lex Luthor, when they met in prison. Luthor may have gotten his ass kicked by Clark last week and fled to Metropolis, but he finds other ways to mess with his hated enemy while he waits for his “killer suit” to be designed.

Superman and Lois airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW, and you can use your Maximum subscription to broadcast the first three seasons. Even though the series ends in just a few weeks, there are plenty of upcoming DC TV shows on the path that will entertain you in his absence.
