The Detroit Tigers no longer cause chaos? The 2025 plan provides for normal rotation

THE Detroit Tigers adopted their bulk bullpen launch strategy during the summer of 2024 out of necessity after trade Jack Flaherty to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the July 30 trade deadlineleaving them with only two starters in the rotation.

It was one of MLB’s Greatest Achievements.

The Robust Opening Bulk Strategy – Envisioned by the President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris – became recognized as “start chaos” in the playoffs. Without Harris’ plan, the Tigers might not have won enough games over the final two months of the regular season to reach the playoffs.

“I think the line between starter and reliever is blurring,” Harris said Nov. 5 at the general managers meeting in San Antonio. “We didn’t have a traditional starter to start our games, but we had a pitcher step in and replicate a starter’s workload. The philosophy behind that is we felt like we could get some better matchups without putting additional pressure on our bullpen.”

The Tigers, however, won’t bring back the open bullpen strategy en masse in 2025, at least not until it’s necessary. The Tigers plan a normal five-man rotation at the end of spring training, headlined by ace Tarik Skubal.

Here’s why it matters: Any free agent starting pitcher interested in signing with the Tigers shouldn’t worry about being forced to take a large number of innings out of the bullpen for strategic reasons.

“As long as you get length at some point in the game during part of the nine available innings, you’re not adding extra tension,” Harris said. “You just sequence it differently. I don’t really think it’s that hard to repeat. I’m not saying we’re going to repeat it. But I don’t think we’re putting unnecessary pressure on our bullpen. We do. I just sequenced it differently.”

The mass opening/relief plan was far from a guaranteed win – the Tigers were 12-11 in 23 games using the pitching strategy invented by Harris after trading four veteran players for seven prospects at the trade deadline. Indeed, they were 22-8 in their other 30 games, including a 7-3 mark in Skubal’s starts. But it wasn’t a guaranteed loss, as so many bullpen days have seemed in baseball.

The Tigers’ early games recorded a 2.05 ERA with 23 walks (15.8% walk rate) and 36 strikeouts (24.7% strikeout rate) over 30⅔ innings; Loose relievers posted a 3.65 ERA with 23 walks (5.5% walk rate) and 89 strikeouts (21.2% strikeout rate) over 103⅔ innings.

“I don’t think it will be difficult to replicate what we did last year if we choose to continue this non-traditional launch strategy,” Harris said. “I don’t think we’re going to do that. We should always tailor our strategy to the personnel we have, but I don’t think it really puts any extra pressure on our pitching staff. I think you can get on base. the playoffs, do that over a whole season if you want.”

The openings of the August and September race: Beau Brieske, Tyler Holton, Alex Faedo And Brenan Hanifee. Loose relievers: Brant Hurter, Brian Sammons, Ty Madden And Kenta Maeda.

Aside from Maeda, Hurter and Madden — the Tigers’ 2021 picks who made their MLB debut in 2024 — have the most long-term upside as starters, which is how the Tigers plan to use the duo in 2025.

“We’re going to be a lot more open-minded about giving them traditional starting roles going forward,” Harris said, “but we’re also still going to try to find the strategy that helps us win the most games. will be this non-traditional approach in the second half, and it could be something different next year.
