Who will fill Stefanik’s seat once she becomes Trump’s UN ambassador?

Once Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., leaves her seat to become a United States ambassador At the United Nations, New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul has 10 days to set the date for a special election to replace her in the House.

The special election is scheduled to take place within 70 to 80 days, and there are already a number of possible candidates reportedly being considered to claim New York’s 21st Congressional District.

Stefanik won a sixth term representing the district that encompasses North County, New York, but President-elect Donald Trump selected her this week to serve as U.N. ambassador in his new cabinet.

Republican names proposed include Sen. Dan Stec, who represents parts of St. Lawrence County and other eastern parts of the state; state Reps. Robert Smullen and Christopher Tague; and Rensselaer County Executive Steven McLaughlin, according to WWNY. Possible Democratic candidates include Rep. Billy Jones, whose state district is just east of St. Lawrence County, as well as former unsuccessful challengers to Stefanik such as Matt Castelli and Paula Collins.

Stefanik won 62.27 percent of the vote last week over Collins, who received just 37.73 percent, according to the Associated Press.

Stefanik built building a national reputation as a steadfast Trump ally and a sharp-tongued Republican voice. First elected to Congress in 2014 at the age of 30, she eventually shed her reputation as a moderate Republican and became the highest-ranking woman in House Republican leadership. Stefanik represents a largely rural district in upstate New York that includes some of the state’s least populated areas.

New York Democrats unseated three first-term Republican incumbents in the House of Representatives last Tuesday, as voters in the Empire State were expected to play an outsized role in determining control of the House.

Stefanik was selected by her GOP House colleagues to be chairwoman of the House Republican Conference in 2021, when former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney was removed from office after publicly criticizing Trump after the 2020 election.

There will also be a separate competition to replace Stefanik as chairman of the House Republican Conference.

Stefanik’s criticism of college presidents over anti-Semitism on their campuses following the October 7 terrorist attacks contributed to the resignations of two of those presidents, boosting his national profile. If confirmed, she would represent US interests at the UN as Trump pledges to end Russia’s war against Ukraine that began in 2022. He also called for peace as the conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah continue.

Stefanik, who has served as a ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Intelligence Committee and the Education and Workforce Committee, released a statement Monday afternoon following his appointment in Trump’s office.

“The historic landslide election of President Trump has given the American people hope and a reminder that better days are ahead – both at home and abroad,” she said. “America continues to be the world’s beacon, but we expect and must demand that our friends and allies be strong partners in the peace we seek. The work ahead of us is immense as we see anti-Semitism rise “soaring coupled with four years of catastrophically weak American leadership has significantly weakened our national security and diminished our standing in the eyes of our allies and adversaries.”
