Shohei Ohtani injury update: Shoulder injury forces Dodgers star out of Game 2 of World Series

Shohei Ohtani’s second career World Series game ended early Saturday night. The Dodgers are hoping his season doesn’t end so well.

Ohtani landed awkwardly on his arm during an attempted base steal in the seventh inning of Game 2, forcing him to leave the game. The Yankees caught Ohtani to end the inning, but that was a secondary concern for the Dodgers with the lead in hand.

The Rangers would be the first to tell the Dodgers that the teams have been in this situation before and have always prevailed. Texas lost Adolis Garcia and Max Scherzer in last year’s World Series, but still closed out the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers took an early advantage in this year’s Fall Classic and are in the driver’s seat for a title, with or without Ohtani.

Here are the latest updates on Ohtani’s injuries and his status moving forward.

Shohei Ohtani injury update

Ohtani favored his arm after sliding at second base against Game 2. The Fox broadcast reported that it was his shoulder, rather than his wrist, that left the Dodgers star in severe pain.

Sounds could be heard as manager Dave Roberts and a translator came out to check on Ohtani, and Japanese media reported that Ohtani said his shoulder “came out.”

Ohtani rolled onto his back and grabbed his left arm seconds after the play, apparently having trouble moving the arm before leaving the field with a trainer.

The injury silenced a Dodger Stadium crowd that was very engaged in the game as the Dodgers led 4-1. Back-to-back homers from Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman gave Los Angeles an early lead, and the bullpen kept the Yankees at bay and the energy was high before the projected MVP went down.

Ohtani’s status for Monday’s Game 3 will be the biggest story Saturday night, but a 2-0 advantage would put the Dodgers in a strong position despite moving the series to Yankee Stadium.
