UC head coach Scott Satterfield addresses what’s missing in Cincinnati’s 2024 loss

CINCINNATI- The Bearcats football team fell by a score last weekend 31-24 to West Virginia as a few brutal turnover errors kept them from clinching a bowl ticket just yet .

Head coach Scott Satterfield has appreciated his team’s energy throughout the season, as mental errors keep them from competing at the highest level in the Big 12 this season.

“I think over the course of the season our guys have played some good, really good football at times,” Satterfield said of the season so far. “Where we struggled to win was mistakes. Whether it was a turnover here or a missed assignment there. I think that’s kind of the difference. I think our guys played hard, really, all year.

“I think the worst game we had in terms of energy level probably would have been in Colorado. I don’t know, maybe it was (kickoff) time, maybe it had to do with a lot of things, for me it was I didn’t feel the same kind of energy on the field, but I thought we came back here and had great energy on Saturday, so you just have to do it. games and we can’t shoot ourselves in the foot.”

Cincinnati holds a respectable +29 point differential this season, but it could be much higher without a few pesky turnovers rearing their ugly heads. They rank just ninth among Big 12 teams with a -1 turnover margin this season, with that margin turning negative for the first time last Saturday.

“Take away the two plays they scored on, we could win by two touchdowns in this game,” Satterfield said of the narrow margin Saturday. “Because we’re up seven (in the first half), we’re 4th and 1, our defense was playing really well. You get the ball. You’re going to score. It’s going to change the whole landscape of the game.”
