An apartment building was evacuated yesterday after reports of a “water leak”. Residents of Willow House on Maple Close, Seaforth, owned by Ocasa Homes, have been asked to leave their apartment following “health and safety concerns relating to the electrical systems”.

In an email seen by the ECHOOcasa Homes requested all residents “settle in” at the Mercure hotel Liverpool. The email said residents should “pack essential items for a three-night stay and travel to the Mercure Hotel.”

Tenants were asked to refrain from returning to Willow House for the next three days while investigations were carried out to “determine the cause of the leak”. Residents were also assured that Ocasa would cover accommodation costs until Thursday 14 November.

Residents told ECHO yesterday (Monday) how they were “disgusted” by the way they were handled by Ocasa Homes. One resident, Molly, 23, told the ECHO she had been experiencing leaks since last year, despite the building being “freshly renovated” when she moved in last June.

Molly said: “We had no lights for a week until they found us an electrician. The drain pipe leaked into our apartment through the ceiling. Every time we call, nothing is being done. We have had enough of this place.

“We were supposed to do an inspection and no one came. We went on vacation and I was on the phone with Ocasa wondering what state we were going to come back in. And after that I was worried the whole time. We came back to all the mold We left here at the end of the month, we bought a house instead They tried to offer us a free month of rent to sign a 12 month stay contract. It’s a real joke.

Ocasa Homes said it successfully identified the source of the leak. Residents living on the sixth floor and above can return to the building this evening, with the exception of three or four apartments where shower trays need to be replaced.

A spokesperson for Ocasa Homes said: “We have now successfully identified the fresh water overflow pipes as the source of the leak in the building, and we are communicating the result to tenants this evening.

“Everyone on the sixth floor and above can re-enter the building tonight, except for three or four apartments where the shower pans need to be replaced. The fifth floor apartments today underwent major work to address leaks on one side of the building. Additional work on another side will be completed tomorrow.

“Once these repairs are completed, restoration and cleaning work will be carried out and we hope to have this completed by the end of Monday. At this point, tenants will be able to return to their apartments, although cosmetic renovation work may still need to take place after their return.

“Returning residents continue to have free access to the Mercure Hotel until Thursday if they cannot return home this evening for any reason and will also receive food vouchers at £15 per day during this period. Tenants who have to leave their apartment until the beginning of next week will have access to an Aparthotel with a kitchen and will also benefit from food vouchers.
