Chris Wallace announces his departure from CNN after 3 years: “excited and liberated”

The 77-year-old veteran journalist said The daily beast on November 11, he will leave CNN at the end of his three-year contract, which he signed in December 2021. His final appearance on the network will air later this year.

“This is the first time in 55 years that I have moved from one job to another,” he told the outlet. “I’m actually excited and liberated by this.”

Although Wallace is considering potentially joining an independent platform in the streaming or podcast space, he admitted he’s still unsure where he might land.

“Not knowing is part of the challenge,” he explained. “I’m waiting to see what happens on the transom. Maybe this is something I haven’t thought about at all.

CNN did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Wallace, who currently presents The Chris Wallace Show on CNN and the hosts Who is talking to Chris Wallace? on Max, joined CNN in 2021 after 18 years at Fox News, where he anchored Fox News Sunday.

At CNN, Wallace was a prominent face of CNN’s short-lived streaming network, CNN+, which was shut down by former CNN CEO Chris Licht in April 2022, just one month after its launch. He was a regular in the 2024 presidential election, until election night on Tuesday, November 5.

Wallace emphasized during his interview with the Daily Beast that his potential move from broadcast journalism to streaming or podcasting was not a criticism of his current employer.

“I only have positive things to say,” he said. “CNN has been very kind to me.”
