Democratic New York Mayor Eric Adams expressed hope Tuesday that the new Trump administration would work with him on the influx of illegal immigrants who have flocked to his city, but said he was not supportive to mass expulsions.

Adams has pushed President Joe Biden’s administration must provide more funding to sanctuary cities that are dealing with the influx of illegal immigrants who have entered the country over the past four years. He also advocated for stronger border security, to ensure that every migrant entering the United States passes a background check.

The liberal mayor indicated Tuesday that he is willing to discuss the influx of illegal immigrants with the new administration, including new border czar Tom Homan. Adams also criticized the Biden administration’s lack of action on the issue.

“I’m prepared to sit down with this administration like I tried to sit down with the previous administration during my 10 trips to Washington to say: we have a problem that is taking over our cities,” Adams said. by Politico. “I hope this administration will hear what I’m saying and listen to some of the ideas I’ve been pushing…for almost two years now.”

New York City has received more than 210,000 illegal immigrants in the last two years, as of October.

The mayor said that in addition to funding and strengthening border security, he would also like to send illegal immigrants to places where populations are declining and allow them to work legally.

Adams also noted that it was not surprising that President-elect Donald Trump made electoral progress in New York, since the Biden administration failed to help resolve the crisis.

“When I talked about public safety in 2021, we ignored it. When I spoke about migrants and asylum seekers in 2023, this was ignored,” he said. “(In) 2021 the top issues? Public safety. (In)2023 the top issues for voters? Immigration.”
