Lincoln may not have seen its first snowfall yet, but that doesn’t mean the city isn’t already preparing for winter.

For the second year, Lincoln Transportation and Utilities is calling on residents to get creative and name the city’s snowplow fleet in the “Name That Snowplow” contest.

“To get into the winter spirit, we invite residents to join in the fun once again by nominating more snow plows,” SEL Director Liz Elliott said in a statement press.

This winter, eight snow plows are ready to hit the streets, but first they need names that will make them as memorable as they are essential.

“Winter in Lincoln is an opportunity for our community to come together and embrace the season,” Elliott said in a news release. “These snow plows are symbols of our commitment to keeping Lincoln safe on city streets.”

The contest is officially open to the public and residents can submit their best snow plow names until November 26. Names can be submitted online to lincoln.ne.gov/NameThatSnowplow. The names of the winners will be displayed on city snow plows in early 2025.

Although creativity is encouraged, participants must follow a few guidelines. Submissions must be 17 characters or less, including spaces, to fit on trucks. Names cannot include profanity, inappropriate language, or copyrighted or trademarked terms. Submissions must also not include your own name.

If two or more people submit the same name, the first person to submit will be credited. City of Lincoln employees and family members are not eligible to participate.

Once nominations are received, members of the public can continue to play their part by voting for their favorite snowplow names from a list of 25 finalists. Voting will take place online from December 23 to January. 3. After the voting period, winners will be announced the week of January 13.

Winners will be notified by phone and email and will also receive a prize, courtesy of LTU, available for local pickup.

Last year’s competition garnered more than 1,700 entries. The winning names were: Clearopatra, Scoop Dogg, PlowyMcPlowface, Dark Blader, Austin Plowers, Truck Norris, AntiSnowcial and Snow Big Red.
