‘I Didn’t Want That’: 9-1-1: Lone Star’s Gina Torres Doesn’t Hold Back on Her Character’s Breast Cancer Storyline

9-1-1: Lone StarThe final season of is a major title on the TV schedule 2024and it was intense to say the least. Since the early episodes featured a train derailment and a dangerous gas leak, personal and professional emergencies were probably enough to keep fans on their toes. Amid all this, Gina Torres’ Tommy Vega was diagnosed with breast cancer, and the actress isn’t holding back her thoughts on the storyline.

It was in last week’s episode, “Naked Truth,” that revealed that Tommy Vega had breast cancer. The revelation came after she received a mammogram in solidarity with Nancy after Tommy found a lump on her chest following an accidental NSFW image leak. The series led fans to believe that Nancy would have cancer since several members of her family died from it, but then came the twist.

In last night’s episode, “Kiddos,” it was confirmed that Tommy’s cancer was stage 2B, to be exact. Talk with TV lineTorres shared what she initially thought about the storyline, especially considering everything Tommy has already been through:

Believe me, I didn’t want that. I felt like I had already done a lot in terms of sad and depressing stories. But no, they still wanted a battle.

Tommy lost his husband, she just broke up with her boyfriendshe almost died early in the season and on a few other occasions, and you’d think they’d finally give her a break. However, it should be emphasized that Sierra McClain had launched the “genius” scenario before leaving the show, knowing that if anyone could do it justice, Torres could.

That’s not to say she didn’t eventually get used to it, especially since it meant honoring real first responders whose lives have been affected by cancer. THE Suits one former student called it “challenging but also rewarding,” and while it’s hard work, it’s certainly important:

We want to honor them, just as we do our best to honor our first responders. This is a level of responsibility that we do not take lightly.

Working on a show about first responders is challenging, but having to juggle emotional storylines like this one about breast cancer adds even more emotion to it.

With only a handful of episodes until Lone Star Ultimately, it’s hard to predict how this will all turn out. Towards the end of the most recent episode, Tommy collapsed from overexertion, pushing herself after her lumpectomy because she wanted to continue working without telling anyone about her cancer. She ended up in the hospital after her daughters called 911 and got help, ultimately revealing her diagnosis to her daughters and Judd.

When Nancy visited Tommy in the hospital, she revealed that she was leaving 126 and that might last for a while as well. But she gave Nancy captaincy, knowing she would be able to keep things under control. You will have to look forward to the rest of this story, as it will take a lot of getting used to for the characters, especially Tommy.
