Paragould hopes to improve housing market with federal funding

PARAGOULD, Ark. (KAIT) – The Town of Paragould has applied for a Brownfields Assessment Grant to improve future real estate properties.

The $500,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency would rehabilitate potentially contaminated old businesses such as unused dry cleaners, gas stations and the former Paragould cotton gin.

Grants Administrator Tara Sexton said the pollutants make the resale of these properties nearly impossible, affecting the people and places around them.

“This will help increase property values of neighboring businesses and homes, and construction will create jobs,” she said. “So it’s very beneficial for the whole community.”

Sexton said the city has about a dozen brownfield sites within the community.
