Sources – Signs Point to Commanders’ Jayden Daniels Playing Against Bears

All signs point to Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels play Sunday against the Chicago Bears, league sources told ESPN.

The Commanders will still have to see how Daniels feels Sunday in pregame warmups before making a final decision on whether he can start. But as one team official told ESPN about Daniels: “He’s a tough guy.”

If Daniels overcomes his rib injury and plays, as he is trying to do, it would spark a battle between the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in this season’s draft — Chicago’s quarterback. Caleb Williams and Daniels.

Daniels is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s home game against the Bears. The Heisman Trophy winner did not practice Wednesday or Thursday, but was a limited participant Friday and participated in Washington’s walk-on practice Saturday.

Daniels would recognize the importance and significance of a matchup against Williams, as well as what the matchup will mean for Washington’s season. The Commanders (5-2) move into first place in the NFC East on Sunday, a half-game ahead of the Eagles (4-2).

“He would want to play if he was missing his right leg,” the team official told ESPN.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Daniels “really pushed it” Friday and the organization “will let our eyes decide how he reacts over the next 48 hours.”

“That will guide us and we will make the best decision for him and for the team,” Quinn said Friday.

Daniels said Friday that he felt good and wanted to play, but acknowledged that “it’s not my decision.”

Daniels injured his rib on his first play from scrimmage in last Sunday’s win over the Panthers. It was replaced by Marcus Mariotawho completed 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

ESPN’s John Keim contributed to this report.
