Nov. 12 (UPI) — President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead his administration’s new Department of Government Effectiveness, or DOGE, to end “government waste” and “dramatically reduce excessive regulations.”

“I look forward to Elon and Vivek making changes to the federal bureaucracy for the sake of efficiency and, at the same time, improving the lives of all Americans,” Trump said. in a statement Tuesday evening.

“Together, these two wonderful Americans will lead the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, cut excessive regulations, cut wasteful spending, and restructure federal agencies – which is essential to the ‘Save America’ movement,” added Trump.

Musk, the richest person in the world who owns EspaceXTesla and the social media platform formerly known as Twitter responded to the announcement in a message on X.

“Threat to democracy?” » asked Musk. “No, threat to the BUREAUCRACY!”

“This will send a shockwave through the system and to everyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people,” Musk added. Musk, who supported Trump and joined his 2024 campaign, said he would quickly work to eliminate $2 trillion from the federal budget.

In response to Trump’s nomination, Ramaswamy — a biotechnology engineer who challenged Trump in the Republican presidential primary this year — made his own announcement Tuesday evening. in a message on X.

“And yes, that means I am withdrawing from consideration of the pending Senate nomination in Ohio. Whoever Gov. (Mike) DeWine appoints to JD Vance’s seat has big shoes to fill. I will help them as much as I can,” Ramaswamy wrote. Ramaswamy was one of several contenders for Vance’s Senate seat after he became vice president-elect last week.

In his statement Tuesday evening, Trump outlined DOGE functions that will bring about “radical changes” and allow the government to operate like a business.

“The Department of Government Effectiveness will provide advice and guidance outside of government, and partner with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to drive large-scale structural reform and create an entrepreneurial approach of government never seen before,” Trump said. .

“What’s important is that we will eliminate the massive waste and fraud that characterize our $6.5 trillion annual government spending. They will work together to free our economy and make the U.S. government accountable to ‘We, the People ‘” Trump added.

The president-elect also announced that the DOGE work “will be completed no later than July 4, 2026.”

“Smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence,” Trump said. “I am confident they will succeed!”
