How to register a game on Steam

Steam has become a central hub for all things PC gaming, but one feature was missing until recently: the ability to save gameplay. Steam has been working on this feature for a while and it’s been available in beta since June 2024. Aptly called Steam Game Recording, the new feature came out of beta on November 5, 2024 and is now available to everyone. Let’s show how to register a game on Steam!

QUICK RESPONSE

To enable Steam Game Recording, launch Steam and navigate to Steam > Settings > Game Recording. Then choose either Save in background Or Save manually. You can then start, stop or save recordings by pressing Ctrl + F11.

GO TO KEY SECTIONS

Requirements

First of all, we need to make sure that you can actually enjoy Steam game recording. In reality, there aren’t many of them, which is quite nice to see. Here they are:

  • The game must support Steam Overlay.
  • Some developers may extend Steam game recording features by supporting Steam Timeline. Here is a list of titles that support said functionality.
  • This update is no longer available for Windows 7, Windows 8, macOS 10.13 and macOS 10.14. You will need an operating system version higher than these to get the update.
  • You must be running the latest version of Steam. The software should be automatically updated for supported machines. If not, push the update manually by going to Steam > Check for Steam client updates. If the update is available, tap Download. You may be asked to Apply and restart Steam.

How to enable Steam game recording

Once you run the latest Steam client update, enabling Steam game recording is actually quite simple. You just have to know where to look.

  1. Launch Steam.
  2. Click on the Steam option, in the upper left corner.
  3. Enter Settings.
  4. Click on the Game recording tongue.
  5. If this is the first time you open this section, you will see a banner explaining Steam game registration. Close it when you’re ready.
  6. You will have three main options: Recording disabled, Save in backgroundAnd Save manually.
    • Recording disabled: This makes it impossible to use Steam Game Recording.
    • Save in background: Starts recording automatically when you start playing.
    • Save manually: Steam will record when you choose to start a recording.

How to Record a Game on Steam Using Keyboard Shortcuts

You can use keyboard shortcuts to start recordings. To do this, you will need to enable Save manually in the options listed in the previous instructions. Once playing, with this option enabled, press the button Ctrl+F11 keys to start or stop recording. By the way, you can customize this shortcut, but the Ctrl + F11 combination is the default.

If you choose Save in backgroundBy default, the system will store the last 120 minutes. You need to think about storing the clips. You can also use the Ctrl+F11 shortcut or customize it. All these settings will appear when you choose either Save in background Or Save manually.

Access Steam game recording clips

Once you are ready to access your recordings, you can do so by following these steps:

  2. Click on See.
  3. Select Recordings and screenshots.

You can also access this section using the key combination Shift + Tab.

FAQs

No. Steam Game Recording is designed to record gameplay only. None of your desktop, other pages, or personal information will appear on the screen.

Although Steam Game Recording technically uses some resources, the service has been designed to minimize the performance impact as much as possible. If you have a dedicated NVIDIA or AMD GPU, most of the work will be done by the graphics card. That said, you may notice a difference if your system doesn’t have a dedicated GPU, as the CPU would then do all the heavy lifting.

The size of a game recording file will depend on the length and quality of the recording, which you can customize in the settings. One of Steam’s examples shows that you can record 60 minutes of Counter-Strike 2 in high quality and the clip should be around 5.4 GB.

Yes, the Steam bridge can enjoy Steam game recording. Simply update the software to access the new functionality.
