Amazon to close Freevee

FreeAmazon’s free, ad-supported streaming service is being shut down.

Sources say The Hollywood Reporter that Amazon plans to integrate the platform into Prime Video, with Freevee executives expected to be integrated into various divisions of the company. Freevee programming will still be available for free to users who do not subscribe to Prime Video (which is included with a Amazon Prime membership).

“To provide a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out the Freevee brand,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. “There will be no changes to the content available to Prime members, and a broad offering of free streaming content will still be available to non-Prime members, including a selection of originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed films and series, and a large library of FAST channels, all available on Prime Video.

Freevee began its existence as IMDb TV and changed name in April 2022 to better distinguish it from its association with the online database, also owned by Amazon. The disappearance of the platform comes around 10 months after Prime Video launched an advertising level (which is the default for users) at the end of January, after being an ad-free SVOD platform. Prime Video users now have to pay an extra $3 per month to no longer have ads.

The launch of Prime Video’s advertising product, along with the availability of Freevee programs on Prime, may have made Freevee redundant.

Amazon had already exposed Freevee originals to its Prime Video subscribers, including in small groups Jury duty And Bosch: Legacy. Content also flowed the other way, with Freevee streaming over 100 Amazon originals, including A league of its own And The wheel of time.
