A woman in Seattle was accused of first degree murder after her killed his father with an ice ax for refusing to turn off the lights in his house, according to police.

Corey Burke, 31, allegedly told detectives that she was trying to convince her father, Timothy, 67, to turn off the lights, but was unable to get him to budge. She also told police that she had been in a very emotional state because of the election and that she felt there was “something important” about Election Day, according to the Seattle Times.

Police were dispatched to the neighborhood where she lived around 8 p.m. on November 5 after someone broke the windows of a home. Burke then left the home with blood on her face and was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Police continued to search the home and found his father’s body in the basement, with injuries to his head and torso, according to the King County medical examiner’s report. A bloody, silver and blue ice climbing ice ax was also found.

The day after the attack, Burke told detectives she tripped and strangled her father with the axe, apparently whispering to one of them that “I killed him.” Seattle Times reports.

Timothy’s serious injuries included wounds to his head and torso, 2-inch lacerations to his ribcage and a puncture wound near the base of his skull.

“Corey stated (when) her father started arguing with her, about the lights being out, that she ‘just freaked out,'” Seattle Detective Azrielle Brikey wrote in a report.

“The defendant told detectives she knew she couldn’t convince him to keep the lights off, so she went upstairs, got an ice ax and tripped her father, strangling him with the ax and his hands, then bit and struck him several times in the head and side with the blunt, sharp ends of the ice ax,” a summary of the case prepared by the prosecutor’s office states.

Police say Timothy was somewhat closeted due to a number of health issues he was facing before his death and was living at his daughter’s home in Rainier Valley, Washington.

Burke was formally charged Friday in King County Superior Court.

Prosecutors asked the court to set bail at $2 million for Burke, citing public safety concerns and flight risk. His arraignment is scheduled for November 21.
