Mom thanks the “angels” who saved her 2-year-old son from the fire in her apartment: “They didn’t stop”

GRANBURY, Texas (KTVT) – Texas firefighters rushed to the scene of a massive apartment fire to find a 2-year-old boy trapped inside and his mother begging them to get him out of the blaze.

Granbury Fire Department volunteer firefighters rushed to an apartment complex early Sunday morning to find heavy flames shooting out of the building — and mother Phylicia Keen was desperately pleading for rescue for her 2-year-old son, Liam, who was stuck on the second floor.

“Around 12:50, 1 a.m., I heard glass breaking. I walk down the hall and enter the living room and realize it was actually my window that had broken from the flames from my balcony,” Keen said.

The mother grabbed her 4-year-old son but could not reach her 2-year-old son.

“By the time I came back to get the baby, the entire living room hallway was engulfed in black smoke,” Keen said.

Within minutes, firefighters were on scene. They grabbed a ladder and rushed to the side of the building where Liam was stuck. Lt. Jonathan Head of the North Hood County Volunteer Fire Department wielded an ax to break a window and bring the 2-year-old to safety. The entire rescue was filmed.

When he was brought to safety, Liam was crying, which his mother was happy to hear.

“Actually, the fact that they told me he was crying was probably the best moment of my life so far, because at one point, just seconds before, I thought my baby was dead,” she said. Keen said.

Liam was flown to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Now he’s back in his mother’s arms, where he belongs.

“Unfortunately, what comes to mind as firefighters is that the outcome will be the same as what we see 80 percent of the time,” Granbury Fire Capt. Bradley Snyder said. “I’ve been doing this for about 22 years, and this is literally the first time I’ve seen things go the right way.”

The Keen family has lost a lot, but they still stand together, thanks to the courage of the firefighters. Keen’s brother is actually a lieutenant with the Granbury Fire Department, but she says all the firefighters are like family now.

“They are extraordinary – heroes, angels – and don’t get enough recognition. They took over and didn’t stop,” Keen said.
