A Big 5 classic | Daily sports bulletin

Tuesday night, Philadelphia college hoops featured two Big 5 games. First at Hawk Hill, where a gymnasium was filled with enthusiastic fans and a happy Billy Lange celebrating with them.

Because for the second year in a row, the St. Joseph’s men’s basketball team dominated Villanova83-76, marking its first home win against the Wildcats since 2011. Both teams had something to prove in this rivalry game. Here’s why: Villanova fell to Columbia on Nov. 6, and St. Joe’s lost to Central Connecticut two days later.

With Villanova star Eric Dixon scoring a game-high 24 points, the Hawks went on a 15-0 run to regain the lead in the second half, and ultimately secured victory.

Although St. Joe’s coach Lange downplayed the possible changing of the guard in the Big 5 with his victory, it’s clear the Hawks are no longer the best. little brother to compete with Villanova.

Now, let’s head to North Broad, where a line filled Montgomery Avenue outside the student entrance to the Liacouras Center to watch Temple take on Drexel, which joined the Big 5 last season.

And fortunately for the home crowd, the Owls took a 69-61 victory over the Dragons, extend undefeated status to 3-0.

Signing linebacker Zack Baun to play inside turned into gold for Howie Roseman. After Baun forced two fumbles and recovered a fumble on Sunday, it’s clear he’s one of the better free agent additions. around the league.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio certainly I saw something in Baun. The 27-year-old has thrived in a new position and excelled in pass coverage. And it’s certainly versatile – it grew up dancing and playing bass.

On Monday, the Eagles opened Jordan Mailatathe 21-day practice window, making the left tackle eligible to return for their Thursday night game against the Washington Commanders. Tuesday began a journey that the 76ers hope will end in Las Vegas. While the Sixers’ home game against the New York Knicks focused on Joel EmbiidIn return, this game also served as the first NBA Cup opener for both teams. The tournament will be played on “Cup Nights”, with matches every Tuesday and Friday evening between now and December 17, i.e. when the championship is played.

Upon his return to the court, Embiid looked rusty and struggled to deal with fatigue during the Sixers’ 111-99 loss to the New York Knicks. The Sixers were punctuated by Paul George’s 29 points.

Tuesday night’s game also featured plenty of new faces on both sides. While Embiid and George played their first game together, offseason additions Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns played in the tenth game for the Knicks. “You have to refine it, and that takes time,” Knicks keep Josh Hart said after the match.

After being left out for two matches, Matvei Mishkov returned to the Flyers’ lineup Monday night against the San Jose Sharks with something to prove. The forward finished with two points – one goal, one assist – and scored one of two shootout goals. He wasn’t the only Flyers top prospect to succeed either; defender Emil Andrae achieved a statement in his eighth NHL game.

From the Flyers of the future to those of the past, Jeremy Roenick was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday evening. The nine-time All-Star had fond memories of his three years in Philadelphia, particularly the 2004 season. Here’s everything he said in his speech.

C) Moses Malone — Tom L. was the first with the correct answer.

What you say about the Sixers

We asked: Can the Sixers still be contenders this season? Among your answers:

Sad to say, but I’ve long lost interest in watching multi-multimillionaires who only play half a season if we’re lucky. Gone are the days of players like Dr. J, Bobby Jones, Maurice Cheeks, Barkley, etc. who put them on every game. Missing games due to legitimate injuries is one thing, but players needing days off and situations like Paul George being on a “minute countdown” are ridiculous. I understand that team owners today want to protect their multi-million dollar investments in these guys, but how about making sure they show up for the season fit and ready to go instead to plan on playing them only half the season. I also have an investment to protect and that investment is what I do with my precious free time and watching the NBA is unfortunately a losing proposition for me. — Bob A.

In my youth, I was always very motivated for all of our Philadelphia teams, but now, in my mid-80s, I am much more reserved in my enthusiasm. I worry about this Sixer team and their chances of being among the best. Your trivia question this morning says it all. Julius Erving, Andrew Toney, Moses Malone and Maurice Cheeks, there was now a Sixer team there was no doubt about. — Everett S.

So here’s our prediction on “Your 76ers”: They won’t make the playoffs. Probably one of the most mismanaged sports teams in the United States. We have full season subscriptions to the Eagles & Phillies. I was going to get a partial plan for the 76ers. I just couldn’t press the buy button. I went to the opening match. It healed us! We have never, ever left a match earlier than if it was a failure. Well, this game was not only a blast, but also an effortless release. We left after the 3rd quarter. One more game and it’s the Brooklyn game. Professional basketball tickets are expensive. At least $100 a ticket for a decent seat. Our Phillies taxes are less than $30 each for the infield, 200 level behind 1st base under cover. — Ron R.

“The goal, of course, is to have the Big Three healthy and healthy for the playoffs.” I don’t understand. Why are the playoffs more important than the season games? For the fans? — Jean T.
